The ABCs of God

A few weeks ago, we talked in church about prayer. One of the main topics of discussion in our connect group that night was about focusing more on praising God in prayer and less on asking for things.

I got all vulnerable and shared that I feel somewhat awkward telling God just how wonderful and holy He is.

I know, I'm getting all deep on you today.

Basically, I'd be great with singing my praises to Him until the cows come home, but actually saying it to Him in prayer felt strange.

True confession: It's probably because I am out of practice. And whatever I say feels so small compared to how truly great and amazing He is.

Anyway, a very good friend made this suggestion and it really stuck with me. So it became my challenge, and now I share it with you. Maybe you will want to take this challenge as well.

The challenge: Use the ABCs to tell God what He means to you.

And here is my version. Some came easy, some required a thesaurus, but they all apply to our God.

God, you are..

Awe-inspiring
Beautiful
My Comforter and
Deliverer
Enough for me

Faithful
Glorious
Healer
Incomparable
Just
Kind

Lovely
Mighty
Never-ending
Overwhelming
Powerful
In the Quiet Moments
Righteous
Staggering
Truth
Unshakable
Victorious
Wondrous
Exalted
Yahweh
Zealous in your love for me

For this and so much more, I thank you God and give You all the praise. Amen.

Who is God to you?

  1. Why can't you sing prayers to God? I thank God for being so wonderful and kind and patient with me. But I like to sing worship songs to tell Him how fantastic He is in general. I get how you feel awkward; it is awkward. We're telling the God of the Universe that He's Great. Great doesn't even begin to cover it. We don't have words to explain how GREAT He is. Makes it hard to worship Him like that. :) But I think worship songs are just as much prayer as saying prayers if your heart is prayerful. :)

  2. You are so right! There is totally nothing wrong with singing our prayers to God - just exercising other ways of doing it! Thanks for your insights!
